To surf safely, you need to read the water, choose the right waves, and be aware of your surroundings. Your instructor will lead you, but here's some basic surf theory to get you started.
Safety comes first
Fun in the water begins with safety! Protect your head when you fall, keep a safe distance from others, and stay calm during wipeouts. Following safety guidelines ensures everyone has a good time.
Perfect the pop-up
The pop-up is essential in surfing. It takes you from prone on the board to standing in one fluid motion. Mastering this is crucial for confidently riding waves.

Here are some tips from our instructors to enhance your surfing:
- Pick a land mark to avoid drifting with the current.
- Watch others before paddling in: see where pros position and how waves break.
- Ignore board size concerns. Larger boards let you catch more waves and enjoy learning.
Surfboard parts
Each section of the surfboard has a specific name: nose, tail, rails—knowing these helps in communication and board understanding.
Wave types and ocean reading
☼ Left-hand wave: Ridden to the left from the surfer's view.
☼ Right-hand wave: Ridden to the right from the surfer's view.
☼ A-frame: Known as split peak, rideable both ways.
☼ Closeout: Breaks entirely at once—not rideable left or right.
Wave anatomy
☼ Peak: Highest point where the wave breaks first.
☼ Shoulder: Unbroken area with less power.
☼ Pocket: Best spot to catch the wave.
☼ Tube: Hollow cylinder, also known as barrel.
☼ White water: Broken section, safer for novices.
☼ Impact zone: Area of maximum wave force crash.
